John Gargiulo is the President and CEO of Daiichi Sankyo, Inc. (DSI) and leads the U.S. commercial operations. During his tenure with organization, he most recently served as Senior Vice President where he oversaw U.S. Marketing, Supply Chain, Managed Markets and New Product Planning.

 

Mr. Gargiulo has been with DSI since its inception in the U.S. in 1996. During this time, he has touched nearly every aspect of its business operations and helped bring it from a joint venture with Parke-Davis to its current status as a mature, commercial organization with approximately 3,000 employees. His broad industry experience during the past 25 years enabled him to shape and grow the organization into a leader in hypertension therapy with an emerging presence in thrombosis and oncology.

 

Early on in the evolution of DSI, Mr. Gargiulo served as Vice President of Marketing for Sankyo Co. Ltd.—joining the organization in 1995—and was instrumental in the negotiation and establishment of the Sankyo Parke-Davis joint venture with Warner-Lambert. As Vice President of Marketing with Sankyo Parke-Davis and later Sankyo Pharma Inc., Mr. Gargiulo helped establish Sankyo’s commercial presence in the U.S. by developing the organization’s new infrastructure, including Managed Markets, Manufacturing, Distribution, New Product Planning and Business Development functions.

 

Mr. Gargiulo is responsible for successfully launching Welchol™ (colesevelam HCl) in 2000 and establishing it as the number one bile acid sequestrant (BAS) within one year. Similarly, under his leadership, Benicar^® (olmesartan medoxomil) was approved for the treatment of hypertension and became the number three branded ARB within seven years with U.S. sales of over one billion dollars. Prior to DSI, Mr. Gargiulo held several positions at Lederle Laboratories, including Marketing Director, Product Manager and Senior Market Research Analyst.

 

Mr. Gargiulo holds an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Boston College. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for The Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PhRMA) and the National Pharmaceutical Council (NPC), an industry trade group focused on evidence-based medicine.
